Your child needs to learn self-confidence and a bit of independence as they start getting older.  If you don´t teach your child a sense of independence they will get scare to go around the corner or to the gas station and it is very silly when you see a kid get scared to do so.  You need to teach him about how to protect himself in case of danger and what to do and not to do when going to the store, how to cross the street and give him a chance to do small things.  But if you let him go to camp you will form a well grounded, well balanced intelligent young person.  You can make him feel more independent by getting him kids camping gear when he goes to a campout or camp, this will give him pride in feeling more of a man. 

You can round him up some important equipment for camping out with a group that is well chaperoned , and a well trusted leader or an organized camp trip.  He needs a kids camping tent if he is going on a camping trip where he will be sleeping out in the wild.  He can share his tent with up to two other boys and he will enjoy his time spending with other boys.  He will learn to work in a team setting up his tent, which is easy to do because it is designed for kids.

He needs a kids sleeping bag because it doesn´t take up much room, kids lantern or Coleman Lights for Kids which is easy to light and safe because it is made for children to use to get around.  He can learn to explore at night, using his flashlight so that he doesn´t get lost and he will do something that young boys love to do.

If there is room in the vehicle that takes him camping, he could take along his kids camping chair to sit down beside a river or lake or just in the campsight while enjoying his time with his friends.  He might be able to use his kids camping chair to have a good talk with or to learn more from his leader.

You need to be sure that as part of his camping gear that he takes along a emergency lights or a fanny pack that comes with lights for signaling in the night in case he gets hurt or lost so that someone can find him quickly.  Or there are several great products that are good for keeping him safe like an adventure belt which has several items for if he gets separated from the group-a place for his flashlight, a compass, wistle and some signaling devices which are perfect for be able to get located if he wanders off.

There are some fun things that he can pack in his camping gear such as a kids nature view finder, a lightning bug lantern for kids or creature finder which he can put his insects in to observe them. For seeing things at a distance he can take along binoculars for kids.  There are many fun items which are made just for kids that your son can pack along with his camping gear for fun and exploring.
