Things to Consider When Choosing a Summer Camp for your Kid

Aside from the wonderful heat and shine of the sun, summer camp is one of the things that makes the season of summer great. For kids who love the thrill of camping but would like to experience it on their own and with the kids of their same age, summer camp is bound to be a great experience for them.

But just like any parent, there may be some worry on your part to let go of your little one. One of the things that constantly make you are wary about aside from getting him the right kids camping gear is how to choose the right summer camp for your kid.

Before packing your kids camping gear, here are some of the tips when choosing your kid’s summer camp:

  1. Choose age-appropriate camps. What your kid used to enjoy two years ago may not be what he wants to do this year. This means that you always have to choose a summer camp that is right for his age, one that offers age-suitable activities and opportunities and teaches lessons about things that are appropriate for his age. Be sure to add to his kids camping gear, other gear that will he need for the activities that he’ll be doing in the camp.
  1. Talk to the camp director and ask the right questions. Don’t ask explicit questions with obvious answers like: do you monitor the campers well, or do you take care of their needs? Instead ask questions that will enlighten you on what the camp is really about to see if the camp’s ideology fits with your family’s belief system.

For example, ask the director about the camp’s goals and ideals.  You can also ask about the philosophy and experience of the director and what kind of discipline he or she enforces. Then see if you are comfortable with the attitude of the director and if you think that the camp will be a secure home for your little one.

  1. Consider your kid’s health and safety in the camp by making sure that the camp is ACA accredited. This accreditation will mean the camp upholds the highest standard of safety and sanitation.
  1. Find out the activities that the camp offers. It is always a good idea to choose a camp that will provide your kid with mind and body enriching activities, preferably those that he is fond of. If your kid is into water sports or fishing, he’ll surely have a grand time in a camp which has amenities for these kind of activities.
  1. Visit the camp. Imagining what the camp looks like will do no good in helping you with your choice. After narrowing down your choices to a few, it’s best that you visit the camp and see for yourself. Giving the camp a surprise visit will show you the real façade of the campsite. And you will be able to gauge if it is homey, clean and safe for your little one.

It is fortunate that there are ways to ensure that you choose the right summer camp for your kid, one that will cater to his needs and will make his camping experience unforgettable. Proper selection of camp will make the difference between a memorable summer and a summer that your kid will just want to bury into oblivion.
